I was nine and talking to God in the shower I knew he was busy said sorry to bother but why am I so bad at being pretty like my mother I wanted to please her guess I’ve always been a people pleaser pleaser I tried to be quiet play nice but I knew I wasn’t doing it right I cried wiped my eyes and then smiled because they didn’t know I was living a lie I don’t know when it happened but I don’t wanna be your cheer captain I shouldn’t have called I know he’s probably busy and when he fucks me over I’ll say that I’m sorry and then I’ll take it off so he says that he wants me cause I’m a people pleaser and now he’s doing lines with the boys on a Monday showed up at my house all strung out like a day late watch his stupid band at the club no one else came cause I’m a people pleaser and I don’t wanna be her I tried to be quiet play nice but I knew I wasn’t doing it right I cried wiped my eyes and then smiled because they didn’t know I was living a lie I don’t know when it happened but I don’t wanna be your cheer captain How did I let it happen I don’t wanna be your cheer captain I was so sad then I don’t wanna be your cheer captain wish that I knew than that I don’t wanna be your cheer captain

I was calling out your name we almost thought something would change but you were smoking through the day & we were kids we broke the chain you say you won’t lie I’ve only been waiting like a child black car, hillside it’s only the middle of the night Always been the only thing that I want sipping whiskey on your back porch We almost made it but we got lost no we don’t want to face it but we didn’t make it you’ve never been one to stick around I’m hiding in the bathroom breaking down we almost made it but we’re lost now No we don’t wanna face it but we didn’t make it You were racing in the street you never put your hands on me and I was looking desperately for something I would never see You say you won’t lie I’ve only been waiting like a child black car tail lights stuck in the middle of the night Always been the only thing that I want sipping whiskey on your back porch We almost made it but we got lost no we don’t want to face it but we didn’t make it you’ve never been one to stick around I’m hiding in the bathroom breaking down we almost made it but we’re lost now No we don’t wanna face it but we didn’t make it Always been the only thing that I want sipping whiskey on your back porch We almost made it but we got lost no we don’t want to face it but we didn’t make it you’ve never been one to stick around I’m hiding in the bathroom breaking down we almost made it but we’re lost now No we don’t wanna face it but we didn’t make it

It was a week before the winter And the gang was all in town You forgot but I remember Everything about it now Said you fell in love in school With a girl straight from a dream So you sat there on the playground Took too much amphetamine when you got down I was speeding like a fool Thinking I could save you Like I’m the exception to the rule I stood at the door of your place Wondering how to get out of this headspace I ranted to a stranger At some upscale downtown bar They didn’t have much to say But they looked like movie star But they didn’t know you Hell I don’t know if I do After six years of being Stupid in love with you and when you got down I was speeding like a fool Thinking I could save you Like I’m the exception to the rule I stood at the door of your place Wondering how to get out of this headspace So I drove until my body gave out I was screaming out the window till no sound was coming out You and I we burned it to the ground

I don’t wanna come over It’s the middle of the night And you’re not sober Maybe you’ll pretend That I’m wrong for staying home You’re sleeping with your friends To not sleep alone What ever happened to loving someone Long enough to maybe hurt someone What ever happened to a little risk of getting sick of it Someone you maybe could have loved You You’re spending all your time Hoping they all notice You’re so casual You’re so fine And maybe you don’t get it At night when it gets heavy I could be there to hold your head up Hold you steady What ever happened to loving someone Long enough to maybe hurt someone What ever happened to a little risk of getting sick of it Someone you maybe could have loved I can’t forget I keep reliving October I swear to god I could tell you wanted me to stay Talked until I missed the train You walked away Can we forget about keeping shit so together Forget about thinking it’s forever and nothing less What would happen if we said what we’re feeling What ever happened to loving someone Long enough to maybe hurt someone What ever happened to a little risk of getting sick of it Someone you maybe could have loved What ever happened to loving someone Long enough to maybe hurt someone What ever happened to a little risk of getting sick of it Someone you maybe could have loved

about

Charli Adams debut LP Bullseye, is out now on Color Study. The album title is inspired by a nickname Justin Vernon gave her playing darts at a Nashville dive bar. “Bullseye” came to represent her more liberated self after a toxic, conservative, upbringing in Alabama where Adams was captain of the cheer team and a worship leader at church before leaving it all to pursue music in Nashville at age 17. Recorded between studios in New York, Nashville and London and completed over Zoom, Bullseye features appearances from Ruston Kelly, Novo Amor and Nightly plus a Grammy Winning crew of producers and mixers including Patrick Dillett (St. Vincent, Sufjan Stevens), Dan Grech (Lana Del Rey, Troy Sivan) and Brian Kierulf (Lady Gaga, Britney Spears).
